Cooking Pear Sauce

Cooking Pear Sauce

In my last post, The Power or Pears: Simple Living Personified,  I mentioned that I would add a few recipes over the coming months. Here is the first a simple pear sauce recipe.

This recipe is so simple. All it takes is love and time. No sugar added – it’s natural and pure if you use the right pears. When cooking with fruit they are so naturally sweet, especially when you cook them. I made two different batches. One with nutmeg and cinnamon and the other without.

  • fresh pears
  • water
  • cinnamon
  • nutmeg

  • pearing knife
  • spoon
  • wooden spoon
  • cutting board
  • hand blender
  • compost bin
  • large quart pot(s)
  • roasting pan
  • jars or freezer containers

Here’s how:

  1. cut and peel pears (you can use teaspoon to core pear halves)
  2. put chopped pears in pot cook on medium-low initially (monitor temperature)
  3. add water to make sure they don’t burn – stir occasionally and add more water if needed
  4. when finished peeling, transfer desired amount to second pot (throw bad parts of the pear in compost and save the skins and cores for Super Pear Juice and Tea
  5. add spices to taste in the original pot
  6. Monitor and turn to simmer…cook for at least one to two hours (the longer the tastier)
  7. heat jars and lids (don’t put the lids on the jars) in roasting pan at 200 degrees for about 20 minutes – not any hotter, this will sterilize if they have been cleaned already
  8. Use hand blender if desired to smooth consistency
  9. Transfer with ladle or serving container with spout to reduce mess
  10. Fill the jars (use an oven mitt – hot) almost to top and seal lid when all jars are full
  11. Label if desired with date and name
  12. If you use a freezer container, wait until it cools to put in freezer.

I love slow cooking. The flavors come out really well. It uses more energy on the stove, but I am generally as efficient as possible in the kitchen without sacrificing quality.

Thanks Stephen. This sounds yummy. The thought of slow-cooking the pears to bring out the flavours and then adding the spices… makes my mouth water.
