promoting just one thing and that's LESS…getting MORE with green simple living
Community is everywhere. It is an intricate part of the web. It plays a vital role in the environment. It is a very eco-friendly trait.
What is community?
To find out let’s step back and look at a general definition.
a group of people living in the same area or from the latin root word communio or sharing in common
It’s about having something in common. We are all a part of a community – the earth.
We share many things in common. A need for water, clean air, and food. We need warmth, shelter and even love. That makes every person you look at just like you!
There are communities that share a more specific interest or have a more common theme. Perhaps they are location based. For instance an ethnic community that comes from one country may gather in a local area in another country to speak a common language and find common interests.
A sports or social club is a community. We see community every day.
Our fragile eco system is another community of species that is dependent on the shrinking environment around it. If that system gets destroyed, a community is gone forever.
It is way to use resources effectively.
People that don’t like these concepts should consider removing their kids from schools, stopping all medical provided by the government, stay off the common roads and provide their own water, sewage and other services. We all depend on community in a very extensive way.
I have a wonderful community that visits my blog and other websites. I am a member at certain forums and I visit websites to share and interact, hence reaching out to other communities. I love the people I get to meet. There are some very special ones too.
I have community offline too with programs like Community Fruit Picking at Not Far From the Tree.
I like a world with community. It helps reduce the need for everyone to do everything themselves. It makes us all a part of something.
It also reduces the impact on the environment dramatically. That makes me like community even more!

I think community is the answer to a lot of problems and we should all work harder with all of our communities…. Sadly community also causes some bad things like marginalisation, they can feel threatened and get too tight knit… Some kind of loose open community system sounds good to me, much like many of the communities I am a part of online.
Thanks Stephen.

@Forest – Community is everywhere. As you mention we are a community when we make comments on blogs. We visit forums and “online communities” to share and learn.
I guess where I’m leading is that we can reduce global impacts by building communities, not destroying them. If we share resources instead of trying to hoard them we will actually find a sense of relief. Look at auto share programs and coops for food.
I hear you on the marginalization. It is a shame that many people feel insecure with anything different than themselves. Change in moderation is a good thing. Exploring and excepting other cultures can be hard. We want to protect the things we know. All I know is that the places I am drawn to have a sense of community…they are greater than the sum of all parts.

It feels good to belong to a community especially if that community is where your likes and loves are. We all are part of different communities and I agree that instead of destroying it, let us just all help in making it firmer.
